Preparing for School

Our Preparing for School sessions are for children due to go to school in September 2018 only and run every Tuesday from 12 noon to 3pm.

We are very lucky to have the expertise of Becky Smith, a qualified Early Years teacher, to run these sessions. In these afternoon sessions we will introduce the children to the routines they will encounter when they start school. This will involve more formalised learning, with tasks based on the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.

A typical session will run as follows:
12.00 - 12.30pm - lunch,
12.30 - 12.40pm - gather children on the carpet and take the register,
12.40 - 12.55pm - introduce the learning objective,
12.55 - 1.30pm - activities relating to the learning objective; these sessions will mostly focus on literacy and mathematics, and will be differentiated according to the children's ability,
1.30 - 1.45pm - gather the children back together on the carpet and talk about what they have learnt. Show each other their work.
1.45 - 2.30pm - outside play; climbing frame, construction toys, painting, sand/water. Fruit and drinks will be available
2.30 - 2.50pm - story/songs/number rhymes
2.50 - 3.00pm - getting ready to go home; the children will get their own lunch boxes, coats and any work they have to take home then Becky will bring them out to the playground to be handed over to the adult collecting them.

For one of the afternoon sessions Becky will teach a P.E. lesson so the children can experience bringing a P.E. Kit to playgroup. This could be the P.E. Kit for their new school or just a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. Some children find getting changed in front of each other unsettling so we think it would be lovely for them to have practised this in a familiar environment.

Becky also has a uniform afternoon where the children can wear their uniforms to playgroup.

We are sure these sessions will help the children develop the skills and confidence needed to ensure a smooth transition to their new schools in September.
